THE BIOTOPIA LAB
IN THE BOTANICAL GARDEN
About the BIOTOPIA Lab
As an interim platform, the BIOTOPIA Lab offers a taste of the new Naturkundemuseum Bayern, its vision and values. It is a dynamic exhibition space, an event platform and an experimental workshop all at the interface of science, art, design and culture. At the same time, the BIOTOPIA Lab offers an insight into the development process of the new museum.
With workshops, raised garden beds, an experimental space, changing mystery objects and special exhibitions as well as interdisciplinary events, it arouses curiosity about the topics of Naturkundemuseum Bayern and invites people to engage with the current status of project.

EXHIBITIONS, WORKSHOPS, EVENTS - AREAS AND PROGRAMS
Exhibition space with interactive installations and a workshop area with an experimental space comprise 350 square meters. The total area is designed for a maximum number of visitors of up to 99 people (under normal conditions without corona restrictions).
In the exhibition area, visitors can investigate curious mystery objects, interact withse an architectural model and media station to learn about the current state of the museum project, fly over Bavaria as a bird in a Virtual Reality flight simulator called Birdly or get inspired by our partners in the Bavarian Natural History Network by exploring their public offerings.

Dr. Auguste von Bayern, Chair Woman of Förderkreis BIOTOPIA
"The BIOTOPIA Lab, made possible with the help of the Förderkreis BIOTOPIA Naturkundemuseum Bayern e.V. and largely thanks to our generous supporter, the BayWa Foundation, is an important step for us on the way to the future Naturkundemuseum Bayern. It provides us with our first space where people can experience the “BIOTOPIA spirit.” Here, BIOTOPIA can increasingly fulfill its important function as an educational and discussion forum for the future-defining topics of life sciences, i.e., biological, geological, and environmental sciences, and as an interface between science, society, politics, and business. And we finally have a place where we can discuss new sustainability concepts, climate protection, genetic engineering, pandemics, and the global biodiversity crisis on neutral ground and on a scientific basis, but above all, where we can discuss and develop creative solutions."

Dr. Michael Apel, Director of Museum Mensch und Natur
"The BIOTOPIA Lab is the bridge between the Museum Mensch und Natur and the future Naturkundemuseum Bayern. Many of the popular workshop programs, for example on the topic of nutrition, are continued and further developed here, but also new exhibition elements and event formats are tested. Of course, it is not a replacement for the previous museum, but it is an important step on the way to a great new house, which will face the pressing questions of our time."

Tanja Seiner, designer and curator of Fungi for Future
"The variety of appearances and functions of fungi is incredibly large throughout the living world in nature as well as in human everyday life. It remains exciting for the future to see how much potential lies dormant in this still largely unexplored realm of organisms."

Konstantin Landuris, Architecture & Design BIOTOPIA Lab
"In close cooperation with the engineers and scientists of Biotopia we were able to realize a trend-setting concept for the Biotopia LAB architecture and exhibition.
It was an outstanding task to create a futuristic hub that fascinates and amazes young and old. The changeable floor plan allows a wide range of usage scenarios in its open areas. It was an exciting process to develop a holistic design concept in which architecture and design flow smoothly into the exhibition object. Under futuristic acoustic panels made of grown mushroom mycelium you can find living caterpillars, virtual reality experiences and many mysterious objects from nature and biotechnology."
