COMING SOON: WORKSHOPS IN THE LAB

+++ OPENING POSTPONED +++

Due to the current corona situation, the opening of the BIOTOPIA Lab to the public is postponed.

BIOTOPIA Lab @ Home

BIOTOPIA activities for at home

However, you can still experience the Lab from now on: The BIOTOPIA team is working on digital and analog formats, experiments and DIY concepts with great commitment to bring you hands-on science to your home until the opening. "BIOTOPIA Lab @ Home" wants to arouse interest in scientific contexts and give you a small foretaste of the activities in the BIOTOPIA Lab - from the bottle garden or your own mushroom cultivation for home-use to the isolation of DNA from vegetables and fruits. We also plan to take a look behind the scenes of the lab with the lab experts, which hopefully will make you look forward to your visit in the near future!

Exciting offers for groups or individuals

Workshops on a wide range of topics from biology & life science in the BIOTOPIA Lab can be booked here soon.

Take a deep dive  into the topics of the BIOTOPIA Lab with our group workshops! You will be guided by our experienced workshop leaders, of course always in strict compliance with the current Corona guidelines.

A workshop can be booked  with a minimum of 4 participants.

Workshop price / per person of approx. 25 EUR to be paid in cash on site. Entrance to the Botanical Garden is waived when you present your ticket (eventbrite) at the cash desk.

Booking details:

You can book our workshops through eventbrite.

The booking is binding. If you cancel up to 1 week before the workshop date, 30% of the costs must be paid, 48 hours before the start of the course, the entire cost must be paid.

Payment is made in cash directly to the course instructor on the day of the workshop.

Further details, dates and open places can be found on eventbrite.

Inquire about your own workshop:

If you are already in a larger group or would like a private workshop, you can also book your own workshop in addition to the dates listed on eventbrite.

This booking does not go through eventbrite. Choose the workshop from the list below and make an appointment by phone. You can find the contact number on our page for the school class program.

We always pay attention to compliance with the applicable hygiene regulations.
In our hygiene concept (in German) you can find detailed information about regular operations, educational program and events.

Current topics

Observe & Understand

HUMUS sapiens
Soil stratification, soil dwellers, material cycle

How is fertile soil created that produces new plants every year? We get to know a number of tiny creatures that ensure that all animal and plant remains can be broken down and recycled in the soil.

Far more than just the “dirt” under our feet, earth is a truly complex and dynamic ecosystem. Let's explore this invisible world together.

Age groups: 4-20+ years
Duration: 1.5h & 3h

Water Worlds
Physics and life in the wet element

Water is a special substance! Thanks to the special properties of the water, many exciting experiments can be carried out with it. When looking through the microscope, you will discover small living beings in a water sample from the castle canal.

The participants are invited to reflect on the reality of life in microorganisms in relation to the physics of water.

Age groups: 6-14 years
Duration: 3 h

Research & Manufacture

The Eternal Garden
Mini-biotope in a bottle

In this workshop we will build a bottle garden to take away or display. At the beginning we talk about which cycles ensure that the garden can survive in isolation. When planting their mini-hermethospheres, the participants think about the conditions under which stability will arise and which will cause instability. At the end the results are presented.

Age groups: 7-18 years
Duration: 2h

Code of Life
Isolate your own DNA

Insights into molecular biological laboratory work: students will learn lab skills such as how to operate microliter pipettes, isolate DNA from one's own cheek cells and perform isopropanol precipitation. Your own DNA becomes visible as a thread-like streak in the test tube. Variants: DNA is isolated from bananas with children under the age of 12 (~ 1 ½ h). The “Genetic Fingerprint” workshop can be held afterwards or on the next day - this is then approx. 1 hour shorter.

Age groups: 6–20+ years
Duraton: 1.5h & 3h

Cook & Cultivate

Kombucha Biodesign
Your own creations from microbial biofilms

With a symbiotic culture of different bacteria and yeasts (SCOBY, English abbreviation symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeasts) one can not only produce a tasty and healthy drink (Kombucha). If you dry the slimy biofilm, you get paper or leather-like material - depending on the thickness - because of the high cellulose content. Sustainable solutions for an environmentally friendly life (e.g. vegan leather, clothing or packaging) will be discussed.
This workshop is particularly suitable for formats in which the participants come back to the BIOTOPIA Lab 1-2 weeks after the first session to view the products and take them home.

Age groups: 4-20+ Jahre
Duraton: 1.5h & 3h

Fungi for future
The world of fungi

What are fungi actually? What do they live on? How do we bring them into our everyday life? We want to give insights into the world of fungi and their role as decomposers. To do this, we microscopically examine petri dishes with fungi mycelium, show how to grow rose oyster mushrooms on coffee grounds in the kitchen and how waste paper can be turned into a valuable raw material with the help of mushrooms. The participants should be empowered and gain self-confidence in order to be able to experiment with mushrooms independently. In small groups of 3 students, the coffee grounds rose oyster mushrooms are given for care. In class, the students can work together to process waste paper into fruit bodies and compost.

Age groups: 14-20+ years
Duration: 1,5h & 3h

News

We proudly announce that BIOTOPIA – Naturkundemuseum Bayern is joining the Global Coalition for Biodiversity,  as the first official member from Germany. The Global Coalition calls for strong mobilisation of all national parks, research centers, science and natural history museums, botanic gardens, zoos, aquariums, and beyond to unite forces and make their voices heard about the nature crisis ahead of the UN Biodiversity Conference (COP15) in 2021. After the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences, BIOTOPIA also becomes the 2nd Natural History Museum worldwide to join the Coalition.

In June 2020, the Museum Mensch und Natur celebrated its 30th anniversary - unfortunately, due to the Corona Pandemic, however, without a celebration or other public event. Since the museum has become very popular with many visitors over the past 30 years, this anniversary is now being honored with a launch in Google Arts & Culture.

Use the search function to select the Museum Mensch und Natur and get the opportunity to explore selected stories and objects. In addition, you can even visit our museum virtually via various museum views. Take your time to look at some of the most popular objects and maybe you will feel like visiting the museum live again.

Google Arts & Culture

A provocative call for the transformation of science museums into "idea colliders" that spark creative collaborations and connections. Gorman focuses on the dialogue between scientists and artists, designers, policymakers, and the public and considers the questions, ideas and experiences of each visitor as an important resource for a new kind of museum experience. The book can be ordered online in English and provides exciting insights into the planned BIOTOPIA – Naturkundemuseum Bayern in Munich and giving forward-looking models of science engagement around the world.

The BIOTOPIA annual review 2019 is now available for download! It includes exciting insights behind the scenes, an interview with Dr. Auguste von Bayern, a review of the EAT festival and much more! So it's worth a glance and whoever is enthusiastic about BIOTOPIA's vision is welcome to donate and become a sponsor.
