May 22: International Day of Biodiversity

20 May 2025

May 22nd is the International Day of Biodiversity. Take it as an opportunity and listen to the Citizen Science and Art project Dawn Chorus to find out which bird species live right next to you - often without you even realizing it.

On May 22, 1992 in Nairobi, the UN member states officially agreed on a joint convention for the conservation of biological diversity. The International Day of Biodiversity is a reminder of this. It invites you to investigate how the species in your environment are doing. With the Dawn Chorus project, you can become a citizen scientist yourself: Take some time at dawn, listen to the birds' polyphonic morning concert and upload your recordings to the global bird song database via your smartphone.

On the Dawn Chorus website, you can find out what researchers around the world can learn from this database - and how artists are using the bird calls.

Help us beat last year's collection record!

The main collection period 2025 runs until 31 May. The more bird song recordings we collect together, the more science can learn about the distribution of bird species. Over the years, this will also allow us to identify possible changes in the species population - for example, because migratory routes of migratory birds change, food is no longer available or breeding sites disappear.

In 2024, more recordings were uploaded to Dawn Chorus than ever before. Will we reach this record in 2025? Get on your smartphone and out the front door! We look forward to your support!
