The data collection period for the citizen science and art project Dawn Chorus began on April 1 and runs through May 31.
Dawn Chorus is the first citizen science and art project to invite people worldwide to record bird songs and upload them to a central database. Since 2020, this has resulted in a growing treasure trove of data that is available for biodiversity research as well as for art projects.
Birds are an indicator species. This means that if they are present in a habitat and thriving, it is an indication of an intact ecosystem. If their populations decline, this signals environmental stress or degradation. Researchers can use the audio recordings from Dawn Chorus to identify regions where bird populations are declining. This allows for early intervention. At the same time, everyone who participates in Dawn Chorus has the opportunity to become a researcher themselves. Get to know the birds in your area and find out what they need to thrive here.
Here’s how you can participate
Get up early, go to the window or outside, and listen to the birds. Record their songs using the free Dawn Chorus app, upload your recordings, and share your experience with people around the world. Find all the information on participating in Dawn Chorus here.
Focus Topic 2026: Nature Reserves
Nature reserves are home to rare animal, fungal, and plant species—and with them, an impressive variety of natural sounds: from the buzzing of tiny mosquitoes to the trumpeting of birds, the croaking of toads, and the chirping of grasshoppers. Under the motto Listen to Nature. Understand Habitats. Protect Diversity. we want to draw your attention especially to these protected areas this year. For example, have you ever viewed the Natura 2000 protected areas on the Dawn Chorus sound map? It only takes one click. Why not record bird songs in a nature reserve near you! Do you hear a difference from your usual recording location?
School Class Contest
Participating school classes will once again be rewarded with a special chance to win this year! If you tag your recordings accordingly before uploading them, you’ll automatically be entered into our drawing. Learn more here (in German)
