Dawn Chorus: City vs. Country Challenge

13 May 2026

On Sunday, May 17, the Citizen Science & Art Project Dawn Chorus is once again launching the City vs. Country Challenge. City slickers or country bumpkins—who will submit the most bird song recordings this year?

Last year, the city came out on top. Who will be celebrating in 2026? We can’t wait to find out!

The challenge marks the final stretch of the main data collection period for 2026, which runs through May 31, 2026. As of today, participating citizen scientists have already uploaded 16,186 bird song recordings to the central Dawn Chorus database. Researchers use the data to draw conclusions about the development of biodiversity. At the same time, the data is available to artists.
